April Showers are great for flowers…

But sometime they can be disastrous for electronics. In January Apple released an update on what to do when your phone gets wet.

If you charge your iPhone while wet the pins (either on the Lightning or USB-C connector) can corrode, causing potential permanent damage. You should not charge your iPhone when it’s wet, but sometimes this cannot be avoided. If you have a wireless charger, this is the best option.

Below are ways Apple recommends how to dry your iPhone:

  • Tap your iPhone gently against your hand with the connector facing down. This can help remove excess liquid.

  • Leave your iPhone in a dry area with good airflow.

  • After at least 30 minutes, you can try again.

  • If you see the ‘Liquid Detection’ alert, there is still liquid in your connector. Leave your iPhone in a dry area for up to a day. It may take up to 24 hours to fully dry.

  • If your phone has dried out but still will not charge, unplug the cable from the adapter and unplug the adapter from the wall (if possible) and then try again.

Here are a few (surprising) things NOT TO do:

  • Do not dry your iPhone using an external heat source or compressed air.

  • Do not insert foreign objects into the connector, like cotton swabs or paper towels.

  • Do not put your iPhone in a bag of rice! Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone. (I will be the first to admit that I have done this in the past and will do this no more!)
